Learn the technique to make perfectly crispy air fryer french fries with a fluffy interior using just a small amount of oil. This easy homemade recipe delivers golden texture every time, making it a guilt-free side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large Russet potatoes, scrubbed
  • 1 teaspoon avocado oil or other high-heat oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder for seasoned air fryer fries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Cut the potatoes into uniform sticks, about 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick. Uniform size helps them cook evenly.
  2. Soak for Crispness: Place the cut potatoes in a large bowl and cover them completely with cold water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours. This step removes excess starch, which is key for achieving that perfect texture.
  3. Dry Thoroughly: Drain the potatoes completely. Spread them out on a clean kitchen towel or several layers of paper towels. Pat them completely dry. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness, so make sure they are very dry before proceeding.
  4. Toss with Oil and Seasoning: Place the dry fries in a clean bowl. Drizzle with the avocado oil and toss gently until the sticks are lightly coated. Sprinkle with sea salt, pepper, and garlic powder, if using.
  5. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees Fahrenheit (195 degrees Celsius) for 5 minutes.
  6. Air Fry in Batches: Place the seasoned fries in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary to allow air circulation for maximum crunch.
  7. Cook and Shake: Cook for 15 to 20 minutes. At the 10-minute mark, pull out the basket and shake it well to flip the fries. Continue cooking until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  8. Serve Immediately: Remove the fries and transfer them to a serving bowl. Taste and add a little more salt if needed. Serve your quick air fryer snack right away for the best results.

Notes

  • For extra crispy air fryer french fries, you can soak the cut potatoes in ice water for 1 hour, drain, and then rinse them again before drying.
  • If you are using frozen french fries air fryer method, skip the soaking and drying steps. Toss frozen fries with 1 teaspoon of oil and cook at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) for 12 to 18 minutes, shaking halfway through.
  • For a garlic parmesan flavor, toss the hot, cooked fries with 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder immediately after removing them from the basket.
