Ingredients
Scale
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup milk
3 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 3 medium apples, Honeycrisp or Fuji recommended)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream and milk.
Alternately add the dry ingredients and the sour cream mixture to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
Gently fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using).
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar.
Ensure your apples are chopped into uniform pieces for even baking.
To prevent a soggy center, make sure not to overmix the batter and bake until a skewer comes out clean.
Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
