A comforting dessert with tender, tart apples and a sweet, cinnamon-spiced oat topping, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith and Honeycrisp recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  7. Let the crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier topping, you can add 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the oat mixture.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
