Make classic apple dumplings with a simple shortcut using crescent rolls and a sweet soda syrup. These dumplings have a tender apple filling and a buttery, cinnamon-spiced sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large baking apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup lemon-lime soda
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Peel, core, and cut each apple into quarters.
  3. Unroll the crescent dough and separate it into triangles.
  4. Wrap one apple quarter with a crescent roll triangle, pressing to seal the seams. Place the wrapped apple, seam-side down, in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough.
  5. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  6. Pour the syrup mixture evenly over the dumplings in the baking dish.
  7. Pour the lemon-lime soda around the dumplings in the dish.
  8. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the syrup is bubbly.
  9. Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use firm apples that hold their shape when baked.
  • The soda helps create a tender crust and adds a slight fizz to the sauce.
  • You can adjust the amount of cinnamon and nutmeg to your preference.
