A comforting, old-fashioned Southern banana pudding recipe with layers of creamy vanilla custard, sweet bananas, and crunchy vanilla wafers, topped with whipped cream. This no-bake dessert is perfect for potlucks and family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 12 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 2 (11 ounce) packages vanilla wafers

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the instant vanilla pudding mix, milk, and sweetened condensed milk until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  2. Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until just combined.
  3. Arrange a layer of vanilla wafers in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  4. Top the wafers with a layer of sliced bananas.
  5. Spoon about one-third of the pudding mixture over the bananas.
  6. Repeat the layers: vanilla wafers, bananas, and pudding mixture, two more times.
  7. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the wafers to soften and the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • To prevent bananas from browning, you can assemble the pudding shortly before serving or lightly brush the banana slices with lemon juice.
  • For a richer flavor, consider making a homemade vanilla custard instead of using instant pudding mix.
  • This dessert is best served chilled.
