Make fresh, authentic guacamole with ripe avocados, lime, onion, jalapeño, and cilantro. This recipe focuses on preventing browning and achieving your desired chunkiness. Perfect for tacos or game day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 12 serrano or jalapeño peppers, finely minced (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Optional: 1 Roma tomato, seeded and diced

Instructions

  1. Cut avocados in half, remove pits, and scoop flesh into a medium bowl.
  2. Mash avocado with a fork to your desired consistency. For chunky guacamole, leave some avocado pieces whole. For smoother guacamole, mash more thoroughly.
  3. Add chopped red onion, minced jalapeño or serrano pepper, cilantro, lime juice, and salt to the bowl. If using, add diced tomato.
  4. Gently stir all ingredients together until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or lime juice if needed.
  6. To prevent browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Use ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure.
  • Red onion provides a milder flavor than white or yellow onions, making it ideal for guacamole.
  • Lime juice not only adds flavor but also helps prevent the guacamole from browning.
  • Adjust the amount of jalapeño or serrano pepper to control the spice level.
  • Serve immediately with tortilla chips, as a topping for tacos, or as part of an appetizer board.
