A simple and comforting German skillet dish featuring bratwurst sausages cooked with sauerkraut, apples, and caraway seeds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound bratwurst sausages
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 apples, cored and sliced
  • 1 (24 ounce) package sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add bratwurst and cook until browned on all sides. Remove bratwurst from skillet and set aside.
  2. Add sliced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add sliced apples and caraway seeds to the skillet and cook for another 3-5 minutes, until apples begin to soften.
  4. Stir in the drained sauerkraut, chicken broth, and water. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Return the browned bratwurst to the skillet. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until bratwurst is cooked through and sauerkraut is tender.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Notes

  • Do not rinse the sauerkraut if you prefer a tangier flavor.
  • Serve with crusty bread, pretzels, or mashed potatoes.
  • A touch of Dijon mustard is a great accompaniment.
