Create a rich, homemade chocolate frosting that achieves the perfect balance between fluffy buttercream and dense fudge. This recipe uses simple pantry staples and is ideal for cakes, cupcakes, and brownies.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the softened butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
  2. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder to the butter, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  3. Add the milk, vanilla extract, and salt. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3 to 5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  4. If you prefer a fudgier texture, reduce the mixing time to 1 minute and use slightly less milk. For a glossier finish, beat for the full 5 minutes.
  5. Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or brownies.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add milk one teaspoon at a time. If it is too thin, add powdered sugar one tablespoon at a time.
  • This frosting holds up well for piping decorations on cakes and cupcakes.
  • If you are looking into quick meal planning options to save time during the week, remember that homemade frosting is a simple pleasure you can make ahead.
