Create a moist, rich, and decadent double chocolate banana bread using both cocoa powder and chocolate chips for an ultimate baked treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or whole milk
  • 1 1/2 cups very ripe mashed bananas (about 3 large)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chunks, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan, or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk the eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix; a few streaks of flour are fine.
  5. Fold in the mashed bananas and 3/4 cup of the chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of chocolate chips over the top of the batter.
  7. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached, but no wet batter.
  8. Let the bread cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes.
  9. Use the parchment overhang or a knife around the edges to carefully remove the loaf from the pan. Cool completely on the wire rack before slicing for the best texture.

Notes

  • For an extra fudgy texture, use dark chocolate chunks instead of semi-sweet chips.
  • If your bananas are not very ripe, you can add 1 tablespoon of sour cream to the wet ingredients to boost moisture.
  • To achieve a bakery style look, reserve a few chocolate chips and press them onto the top of the batter right before baking.
