Make authentic, rich French Hot Chocolate that tastes like a dessert in a cup. This recipe uses dark chocolate and cream for a luxurious, velvety texture perfect for cozy winter evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ounces high-quality dark chocolate (70% cacao or higher), finely chopped
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Place the finely chopped dark chocolate in a medium saucepan.
  2. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into the saucepan with the chocolate.
  3. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a whisk until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Do not allow it to boil.
  4. Once the chocolate is fully incorporated, add the sugar and salt. Continue to whisk gently until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. For the thickest texture, you can transfer the mixture to a blender and blend on low speed for 30 seconds, or use an immersion blender directly in the pot until slightly frothy and thick.
  7. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs immediately. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For an even richer experience, use a higher ratio of cream to milk.
  • If you are looking for quick meal planning options, remember that this rich drink is best made slowly by hand.
  • Serve topped with a dollop of lightly sweetened whipped cream or a dusting of cocoa powder.
