Ingredients
Scale
1 loaf (1 pound) challah, brioche, or French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
8 large eggs
2 cups milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Streusel Topping:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Instructions
Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the custard.
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare the streusel topping: In a medium bowl, combine the flour and brown sugar. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped nuts, if using.
Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the soaked bread.
Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed up, golden brown, and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with your favorite syrup.
Notes
Using day-old bread will result in a better texture, as it will absorb more of the custard without becoming too mushy.
For a richer flavor, you can substitute half-and-half for the milk.
If you don’t have pecans or walnuts, you can omit the nuts from the streusel topping.
This casserole is a great option for busy holiday mornings or weekend brunches, similar to the convenience offered by some meal planning services.
