Create a decadent, creamy hot chocolate from scratch that’s far superior to any mix. This recipe delivers soul-warming comfort in every sip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold milk
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: Pinch of cinnamon or cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Pour in the cold milk and whisk until a smooth paste forms. This prevents lumps.
  3. Stir in the remaining whole milk and heavy cream.
  4. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until it is hot but not boiling. Do not let it boil.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Add any optional spices if desired.
  6. Pour into mugs and serve immediately. Top with marshmallows if you like.

Notes

  • For an even richer drink, use half and half instead of whole milk.
  • If you don’t have heavy cream, you can use more whole milk, but the texture will be slightly less creamy.
  • This recipe is a great base for variations. Try adding a dash of peppermint extract for a festive twist.
