A comforting, homemade Salisbury steak recipe with tender beef patties smothered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. This retro American staple is perfect for a satisfying weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Do not overmix.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval patties.
  3. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove patties from skillet and set aside.
  4. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and start to brown, about 5 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms and stir for 1 minute to cook the flour.
  7. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  8. Stir in the Dijon mustard. Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook until it thickens, about 5 minutes.
  9. Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
  10. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles to soak up the delicious gravy.
  • For a deeper flavor, you can add a splash of red wine to the gravy after cooking the flour.
