A beautiful, layered dessert perfect for holidays and celebrations, featuring cake, custard, fruit, and whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup sherry or fruit juice (optional)
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for berries)
  • 2 cups prepared vanilla custard (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for whipped cream)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for whipped cream)
  • Fresh mint sprigs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. If using, gently toss the pound cake cubes with sherry or fruit juice in a bowl. Let them sit for a few minutes to absorb the liquid.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the berries with granulated sugar. Let them sit for about 10 minutes to release their juices.
  3. In a large glass trifle bowl or individual serving glasses, start layering. Place a layer of the soaked pound cake cubes at the bottom.
  4. Spoon about half of the prepared vanilla custard over the cake layer.
  5. Add a layer of the sugared berries over the custard.
  6. Repeat the layers: another layer of pound cake, the remaining custard, and the rest of the berries.
  7. In a clean bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  8. Spread or pipe the whipped cream evenly over the top layer of berries.
  9. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs, if desired.
  10. Chill the trifle for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For a kid-friendly version, omit the sherry and use fruit juice or skip the soaking liquid altogether.
  • You can use store-bought pound cake or sponge cake. Ladyfingers also work well.
  • Homemade custard provides the best flavor, but good quality store-bought custard or even instant pudding can be used for convenience.
  • Feel free to use your favorite fruits, such as peaches, kiwi, or mixed fruit.
  • The trifle can be assembled a day in advance; it often tastes even better the next day.
